Trauma-Informed Care

October 3 and  10

We’ve been through a lot these last 18 months. “Trauma-informed care” recognizes the accrued effects of repeated blows to our equilibrium, seeking to understand and heal the roots and symptoms of trauma. Jesus’ ministry was (and is!) a ministry of healing. We participate in this ministry by exploring multiple means to promote the health and unity of body, mind, and spirit when they are threatened by traumatic events and their aftermath. During these sessions, professionals from the disciplines of psychotherapy, education, and body movement will help us understand trauma and its treatment.

Last Sunday, the Rev. Catherine Watkins, UCC pastor and trauma-informed therapist at SamaraCare Counseling, provided a clear and animated introduction to the topic. She also provided this one-page handout.

This Sunday, October 3, Trynia Kaufman, author of “Trauma-Informed Teaching: What You Need to Know,” will be with us. Read Trynia’s article here

October 10 - Melissa Lorraine, artistic director, Theatre Y. Body movement and the healing of trauma.

Meeting Christianity Again for the First Time

October 17, 24, 31 8:30-9:45 a.m., In-person in the Centennial Room and on Zoom

What is Christianity? If you were to “start over” with the Christian faith, encountering it as if for the first time, what would you want to know? Where would you begin?

Participants in these three sessions will be invited to remember and share what they learned about Christianity growing up and how that formation looks to them now. What topics were covered? What were missed or avoided? Were questions and critical thinking encouraged? Did it emphasize beliefs (the head), experience (the heart), ethics (behaviors), or all three? Did your early faith formation adequately prepare you for your lifelong spiritual journey? How did it affect the kind of Christian and human being you are today?

Our goal is to help participants come to their own understanding of the faith of Jesus. We will keep the conversation contemporary and relevant, thinking about the Christian faith not only in terms of history and beliefs, but our personal spiritual lives and how we are to live in the world. There will be ample time for discussion. All questions and opinions welcome! Nothing’s off the table! (Really!!)

All recorded Spiritual Enrichment sessions can be viewed here.

Spiritual Enrichment is WCC’s ministry of faith exploration and formation, uniting head and heart in pursuit of an honest and vibrant Christian faith that is open, relevant, faithful, and transformative.
